What Is a HUD Data Plate, and Why Does Your Insurer Ask for It?

By Nymble Insurance LLC · Published · Updated · 2 min read

The HUD data plate is a paper label inside a manufactured home, often in a kitchen cabinet, bedroom closet or near the electrical panel. It lists the manufacturer, serial number, date of manufacture and the HUD wind zone the home was built for, which helps insurers rate it correctly.

Where to look

What it shows

Manufacturer, model and serial number, manufacture date, and wind, roof-load and thermal zone maps. Florida's coastal counties fall in higher wind zones.

If it's missing

Your title, the HUD certification label on the outside of each section, or a copy of the plate from the state's records can help. Tell your agent what you have.

Quick answers

Is the data plate the same as the HUD label?

No. The HUD label is a metal tag on the outside of each section; the data plate is inside.
